First Year Experience

Coyote Mentor Program

***To sign-up for the Coyote Mentor Program visit: TBD***

Get matched with a USD faculty or staff member based on your personal and academic interests. Mentors and mentees meet throughout the year at their leisure for coffee, dinner, a sporting event or other mutually interesting activity. Students who have participated in the past liked having someone on campus that they knew well who they could talk to about anything.

Quotes from Mentees & Mentors:
  • Coyote Mentor Sara Peterson, Academic & Career Advisor: "I've enjoyed coffee & dinner dates with my mentee, during her first semester at USD. It's been fun to listen to her tales about the ups & downs of her freshman year. At times, I have been able to offer her valuable academic advice, and at other times I've simply listened and laughed with her as we've discussed roommates, boyfriends, professors, family & classes."
  • Coyote Mentor Kurt Hackemer: "The mentoring program introduced me to a student whom I otherwise might not have met for some time, and I think we're both the better for it. It's been great to see the college experience through the eyes of an enthusiastic first-year student, and I think I've been useful in helping her figure out how things work at USD. I always look forward to our regular lunches, which I'm sure will continue beyond the freshman year, to hear how she's doing."
  • Coyote Mentee Corey Wannamaker, USD Freshman: "I love the Coyote Mentor Program! It was so nice to sit down with my mentor and talk to him about what I wanted to do with my schooling and career, and listen to his opinions that ranged from choosing classes to internship opportunities. He always was very flexible with when we met for lunch, and very supportive."
