Alternative Service Days

Alternative Events give you the opportunity to "get your feet wet" in a societal issue through community service.  Each opportunity is focused around a particular issue and involves education and reflection activities.

Previous events have included:

Weekend Getaway to Cedar Falls, IA
  • Worked with Black Hawk County Long Term Recovery Committee on flood relief
  • Assisted with a variety of needs including clean-up, painting, soil and replanting needs and drywall installation 
  • Issues: Disaster Relief
Weekend Getaway to Omaha, NE
  • Prepared the Gifford Park Community Garden for the winter
  • Issues: Community Sustainability
Serve Locally for Make A Difference Day
  • Teamed with other students and community members to work in the Vermillion Community Garden to build a tool shed and Sharing the Dream in Guatemala painting accent walls and shelves
  • Issues: Community Sustainability, Fair Trade, Community Arts
Weekend Getaway to Minneapolis, MN
  • Traveled to Minneapolis to build a house for Habitat for Humanity and serve in a temporary homeless shelter
  • Issues: Homelessness
Serve in Sioux Falls, SD
  • Worked with Volunteers of America at a local thrift store and at the Bowden Youth Center, ending the day with a tour of downtown Sioux Falls while discussing the issues of homelessness
  • Issues: Hunger, Homelessness  
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 
  • Helped plan this huge event by joining the student board
  • Served on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with over 100 other volunteers on various projects throughout the Vermillion area 

Habitat Project

AWOL Project During an AWOL Trip to Fort Thompson, S.D., students work on the Dacotah Tipis project putting siding and roofing on a Habitat for Humanity house.
