  5. Plan ahead: Visit the USD Catalog  and select at least 8 courses that you would like to take.  Have these ready to work with your advisor.
  6. Once accepted, Admissions will assign you an Academic Advisor to help you register for classes.
  7. Register for classes. You will be registered in your preferred classes based on their availability.  A student's current standing determines their registration priority level (Upper classmen=high priority; Lower classmen=low priority).
  8. Housing: Once you have been accepted into The University of South Dakota, University Housing will send you a housing application. University policy stipulates that all individuals of freshmen and sophomore standing (meaning that the applicant has graduated from high school in the last two years) must live on campus. If eligible to live off campus, it is up to the student to obtain housing. A starting point is http://www.vermillionapartments.com.
Tuition and Fees:
  • Plan A students pay the University of South Dakota tuition and fees, while Plan B students pay their college and university mandated fees. However, Plan B students may also be required to pay fees to the University of South Dakota. Both Plan A & B students are required to pay a One-Time Institutional Application Fee of $20.00.

Financial Aid:

  • Plan B: Federally-funded financial aid is awarded by, and disbursed from, the student's home campus using a real budget which includes the tuition and fees of the home campus; transportation; and the room, meals and incidental budget of the host campus.
Getting to Vermillion
  • By car: Vermillion, SD is primarily accessible via Interstate 29. When coming from the North or South on I-29, take Exit 50 and travel 6 miles west to reach Vermillion.
  • By airplane: You need to fly into the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, airport or the Sioux City, Iowa, airport. You will need to provide information about your arrival to Global Learning at least one week prior to your arrival so we can arrange to have someone pick you up from the airport. It is often a student who will pick you up, and you'll need to have your housing arrangements (dormitory or off-campus) made before you arrive. If you have not made arrangements, you'll be taken to the Prairie Motel which is 1 block from campus. The cost per night is approximately $50.00.
Parking
  • Parking permits are required of all students who choose to park on campus. Parking on a university lot without a permit will result in a fine. Purchase a Permit.
Living on Campus During Breaks
  • Many students take the opportunity to travel during the holiday breaks from classes. However, some students prefer to stay on campus to study or save money. Please be aware that your housing contract is only for the times when school is in session. You will have to pay separately if you plan to stay during any of the breaks and during orientation before your first semester. The cost is about US$10.00 per day, but you should know that cost is not built into the estimated costs on this application. There is a four-day holiday break at the end of November, a two-week winter break during December and January, and a one week spring break in March. Also, you may want to ask University Housing which dormitories are "break housing" dorms so that you will not have to move out during the break. It is expensive to staff and heat buildings during breaks so Housing keeps only one or two buildings open during each break. If you are not living in one of the break dormitories, you do not have to move all of your belongings, but you will not be able to stay in your room during that break.
