USD Faculty-Led Programs

Many USD faculty members and academic departments organize short-term faculty-led study away programs for students. Most faculty-led programs are offered during the summer sessions, while some are offered during spring break. All USD Faculty-Led Programs (formerly Study Tours) are led by USD faculty and staff members.

 

2011-2012 Faculty-led Programs:

 

SPAN 496 - Adventures of Andalucía

Location: Souther Spain (including Seville, Cordoba, Granada and Cadiz)
Travel Dates: June 10-19, 2012
Description: This course is designed to offer students a unique opportunity to use and expand their acquired Spanish speaking skills by interacting with native Spanish speakers in Spain. This course promotes cultural awareness and understanding through inter and intragroup communication. This course also emphasizes the writing sills that students have acquired in previous Spanish course work.
Cost: $4434.90
      + 3 credits of tuition (self-support rate)
Pre-requisites: Completed SPAN 202 with a grade of C or better

Location: Wolfsburg, Germany
Travel Dates: May 14-26, 2012
Description: These courses are integrated into a two week international course of study consisting of classroom work, field studies, and presentations. They include a study of the marketing, automobile manufacturing and sales, German culture and business models.

POLS 492/592 - On the Ground: Israel & Palestinian Politics, History & Culture

Location: Israel and Palestine (including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ramallah and Haifa)
Travel Dates: May 10-23, 2012
Description: This study trip will introduce students to the country of Israel and the Palestinian Territory of the West Bank. Students will experience the history, politics, and culture of these two entities through visiting the major historical an religious sites in the Old city of Jerusalem, the Israeli and Palestinian governments in Jerusalem and Ramallah, the Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem, the Israel Museum, Mt. Herzl, and NGO's and Bir Zeit University in the West Bank. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to visit Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Bethlehem.
Cost: $3636.90
      + 3 credits of tuition (self-support rate)
Pre-requisites: No course pre-requisites required; interview and explicit permission from faculty leader required for participation.

POLS 492/592 & HIST 492/592 - The Roman Heritage

Location: Italy (including Rome, Florence and Venice)
Travel Dates: March 2-11, 2012
Description: This course will explore the people, places, and political ideals of the Roman republic, its transition to an empire, its eventual collapse, and its influence on the founding of later republics such as Florence, Venice, and the United States of America. Particular attention will be give to the influence that the Roman heritage of republican political thought had on the founders of the American republic, as well as the manner in which the Roman heritage continues to influence our political, administrative, and legal institutions.

ENGL 493/593 or THEA 490/590 - Shakespeare & Company at Blackfriars

Location: Staunton, Virginia
Travel Dates: March 3-11, 2012
Description: Read English Renaissance plays and then see them performed in a reproduction of Shakespeare's in door theater while also attending rehearsals and lectures and participating in workshops and discussions with the actors.

PSYC 492/592 - Darwin & the Galapagos Islands

Location: Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands
Travel Dates: May 16-27, 2012
Description: Travel to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands to visit the Charles Darwin Research Center and learn about the gift of the Galapagos as you explore the islands and learn about the interactive influences of heredity and environment on the behavior of human and non-human animals. Organized by EF College Study Tours.

ADS 492/592 - Canada Faculty Led Program and 44th Annual Addiction Conference

Location: Toronto, Canada
Travel Dates: May 24 - June 2, 2012
Description: Travel to Toronto, Canada to attend the 44th Annual Addiction Conference and conduct local site visits to an addiction hospital and methadone clinic to gain a better understanding of the Canadian healthcare system and their approach to addiction and treatment.

ARTH 492/591 - Ireland & the Book of Kells

Location: Ireland
Travel Dates: June 11-23, 2012
Description: Study the art of the illuminated manuscript focusing on the Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is a brilliantly decorated copy of the four Christian Gospels and is housed at Trinity College, Dublin. While in Ireland, students will see and experience the land, culture, and history of Ireland, which will help to place the book within the context of the place and people that created it. Organized by EF College Study Tours.
