Do you find the same question coming up again and again? If you're searching for the answer to a student's question, try looking it up in our list of frequently asked questions. Let us know if you would like something added.

Academic Scholarships? There are numerous academic scholarships available at The U. Check out the U's Freshmen Scholarships for a list of all scholarships available for incoming freshmen.

Promise Scholarship?

Any first time accepted freshman that earns a 24 or higher on their ACT automatically receives a $1000 scholarship per year that is renewable for four years provided they average 30 credit hours per year, have at least a 3.2 GPA and attend the Vermillion campus.

Entrance exam required?

If a student is 21 years of age or under, The U requires that they take the ACT or SAT. For students past the age of 21, the U does not require an entrance exam.

Admission requirements? Take a look at our Admission Requirements for the most current information.

Registering for classes? Students will be paired up with an advisor from their department or major. (If the student is undecided, they will work with an advisor from Academic Advising.) During the summer before your students start at The U, they will choose a Fast Track session to attend where they will meet with their advisor one-on-one to register for classes and get on the right track in their major.

Students will begin building a relationship with this advisor that they will have for the next four years. The advisor will know all of the classes the student will need to take. Students can also tell their advisor some elective classes that they may wish to take in addition to their required courses.

Accepted automatically? Students who meet the admission requirements will automatically be accepted to the U. Take a look at The U's Admission Requirements for more information.

Dual credit courses? Yes. High school students who have completed their sophomore year of high school may take dual credit courses at USD. To do this, students must submit an application form, a high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from the student's high school counselor or principal.

Students may also receive credit for work they've done in AP (Advanced Placement) courses should they earn the score requirement for credit. A student may also take a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) test and receive credit if the student earned the required score. Students will be asked to cover the fee of the CLEP exam.

If a high school student wishes to take courses through another university/college and have the credits transfer to The U, they should consult the USD Admissions Office for more information.

Purpose of  placement tests? Students are required to take the placement tests for THEIR benefit. The purpose of these tests is to ensure that students will be placed in a course that will challenge but not overwhelm them. The scores from these tests tell us what level course a student is ready to take on.

Varsity sports? The U will move to NCAA Division I in 2008-09. Men's varsity sports include baseball, basketball, football, cross country, track & field, swimming & diving and golf. Women's varsity sports include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball.

For more information on varsity sports at The U, check out The U's Athletic Department.

Appeal Process? The U has an appeal process students can go through if they do not meet the admission requirements. Students can write a personal essay addressing this statement: "Provide an example of something you have accomplished. What personal qualities allowed you to succeed where you otherwise might not have?" Along with the letter, students must also provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher that teaches a core class. After we receive both letters, the appeal committee will meet and review the student's file.

For more information, check out the U's Appeal Process.

Campus locations? The U has campuses located in Vermillion, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Watertown.

When to apply? The U does not have a deadline for application, but it is best to apply early. A student can apply anytime after their junior year is completed. Students should apply during the summer before their senior year or in the fall of their senior year.

Applying early allows students to compete for scholarships, receive housing applications when they are first sent out and receive Fast Track registration information. They will also receive other important information from us throughout their senior year after they have been accepted.
