New Trojan Virus [Virus Alert]

UPDATED: January 4, 2006. A new trojan virus has been discovered that affects computers with the Windows XP operating system.
There is a new trojan virus that is affecting Windows XP systems. Computer are becoming infected through image files, such as .jpg and .gif; as well as Windows Media .wmf files. This virus is infecting computers that are up to date with security patches.
We recommend using extreme caution when accessing any of the above mentioned files.
ITS is currently working on a resolution.
Update: ITS has applied a fix that will help protect against the recent discovered vulnerabilities.
As a result of this fix, Windows Picture and Fax viewer and thumbnail icons will not be available. Pictures can be viewed using alternate applications such as Paint.
This is a temporary fix, and the ability to use Windows Picture and Fax viewer as well as thumbnails will be restored once a more permantent fix for the vulnerability has been developed.
