Campus Life at USD

Make new friends. Join a club or team or take in a performance. Expect to participate. There is always something going on at the University of South Dakota.

The University of South Dakota is South Dakota's designated liberal arts institution and its flagship university. The university's tree-lined campus, manicured green lawns, sculptures and displays of seasonal flowers create a lush park-like setting. Bicycles are a popular transportation option around campus. Bike racks are located close to most buildings. The Princeton Review rates USD as one of the nation’s best institutions for outstanding undergraduate academics, according to its “The Best 377 Colleges: 2013 Edition.” USD is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Health Sciences, the state's only School of Law, School of Medicine, the accredited Beacom School of Business and the College of Fine Arts. 2012 marks USD’s 150th anniversary. USD is South Dakota’s oldest university. In the Lee Memorial Medicine and Science Building, state-of-the-art technology enhances health sciences and medical education and research. The new Wellness Center is the campus hub of recreation offering intramural sports, a 38-foot climbing wall, multiple recreation courts, a walking/jogging track and workout and strength-training equipment. President and Mrs. Abbott participate in most campus activities and athletic events. The Muenster University Center houses event spaces, student organization offices, student dining, the bookstore and more. The campus lawn is perfect for afternoon studying or finding a pick-up game. Almost all freshmen live on campus in a variety of living options, including Coyote Village, which provides suite-style and apartment living for more than 500 students. Undergraduates have numerous opportunities to conduct research with professors. The Academic Commons located on the first floor of the I.D. Weeks Library Building provides convenient access to academic, technical and research support. Nationally competitive scholarships are often hard to win, however, students from USD win one or more of these competitions virtually every year. Study abroad programs complement your class work by focusing on language, culture, history, international business or other areas of specific interest to you. Community service programs provide opportunities to travel locally, nationally and internationally to engage in service projects, and gain new perspectives on social issues. Award-winning faculty who are experts in their field will inspire you to maximize your potential.
