Why did you choose USD?

USD was the only college in my home state that offered a four-year degree program in Anthropology.

What inspired you to choose your major?

As a reader and writer of science fiction and fantasy stories, I'm fascinated with the different worlds that authors have created and the culture clash that sometimes occurs in human/alien interactions.  It made me realize that I wanted to learn more about other cultures in my own world.

Who inspired you most at USD?

Dr. Dona Davis is a constant source of inspiration and support.  Her classes are always thought-provoking and informative.  She has mentored me through a presentation at the 2009 IdeaFest, a presentation and student award at the 2010 SACC Conference (Society of Anthropology in Community Colleges), and a major thesis project in 2011-2012 based on her class in Narrative Data.

What has made a difference in your college experience?

I've gained a better understanding of how people are motivated by their cultural and historical backgrounds, which has helped me to be more tolerant and patient with others.

What is your favorite part about USD?

The teachers are definitely the best.  They care deeply about their chosen fields of study and do their best to impart whatever they can to their students.  They are always willing to help, listen, and encourage.

What are your plans after graduation?

I recently married and hope to start a family soon, so the possibility of grad school has moved to the distant future.  In the meantime, I'll continue writing, content in the knowledge that my characters and fantasy worlds have more depth and believability because of what I've learned during my college experience.
