Women's Studies Program
Women's Studies is an 18-hour interdisciplinary minor that focuses on women as central participants in and subjects of the intellectual traditions that make up the liberal arts.
Writing Program
The USD Writing Program supports the University's liberal arts mission by helping students to develop the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary to engage fully as members of the academic community while at USD and in their careers and lives following graduation.
Dakota Writing Project (DWP)
The DWP is one of about 200 sites affiliated with the National Writing Project (NWP), a federally-funded professional development program which seeks to improve the teaching and learning of writing through collaboration between university and K-12 teachers. DWP hosts events for educators, including the annual Invitational Summer Institutes and writing retreats.
South Dakota Review
South Dakota Review, a quarterly journal established in 1963, publishes both critical and creative work for a national audience.
Vermillion Literary Project
The Vermillion Literary Project is an award-winning student organization that publishes a literary magazine and promotes all sorts of literary events, for both the university community and the general public.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL at The University of South Dakota helps students who are not native speakers of English to improve English skills. Classes are small, so students are assured of opportunities to practice their English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
University Writing Center
The University Writing Center provides services designed especially for any undergraduate or graduate student, including international students using English as a second language. Knowledgeable, experienced writing consultants work with academic papers, dissertations and theses, proficiency (CAAP) exams, and any other work that involves writing. Consultants are also available to visit classes.
John R. Milton Writers' Conference
The biennial John R. Milton Writers' Conference was established in 1998 to celebrate the life and work of University of South Dakota English professor and South Dakota Review founder John R. Milton. The conference pays tribute to John R. Milton's lifelong engagement with and commitment to Western writers and literature.
