What Can We Offer You?
- We are the only school in South Dakota that offers a Ph.D. in English, along with a B.A., a B.S., a B.S.E. and an M.A. in English, with undergraduate and graduate courses, not only in the traditional areas of this discipline, but also in literary theory, linguistics, and creative writing.
- We are home to South Dakota Review, a highly respected literary magazine that continues a 40-year tradition of publishing excellent fiction, poetry, and non-fiction for a national audience.
- The Vermillion Literary Project, an award-winning student organization, offers you a way to get involved in the local literary scene, whether you're a graduate or undergraduate student.
- We offer numerous scholarships, awards, internships, and teaching assistantships to deserving students.
- Visit the University Writing Center for help with your writing. If you're already a strong writer, consider becoming a Writing Center consultant.
- Our department regularly sponsors colloquia and other literary events of interest.
- English students present regularly at IdeaFest, a showcase of student research and creativity at The U.
- The Dakota Writing Project, a non-profit organization for teachers of every discipline and grade level, makes its home in the English Department. The Dakota Writing Project is dedicated to improving writing in the classroom.

Organizations & Resources
Alpha Mu Phi
Alpha Mu Phi is USD's local Sigma Tau Delta chapter. This organization's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.
Shakespeare Garden
Naturally, the English Department is quite fond of the Shakespeare Garden at The U. Here, you will find information on the history of the garden and the kind of plants featured in it.
University Writing Center
The University Writing Center provides services designed especially for any undergraduate or graduate student, including international students using English as a second language. Knowledgeable, experienced writing consultants work with academic papers, dissertations and theses, proficiency (CAAP) exams, and any other work that involves writing. Consultants are also available to visit classes.
