What is your favorite part about USD?

My favorite part about USD is the faculty. I have developed great working relationships with the faculty in the history department and throughout campus.

What did you take part in that made a difference in your college experience?

The Honors Program offered me a chance to have a very challenging, but equally rewarding college experience. Honors gives you a rare opportunity to work with your peers and professors on a very intimate level. Student Government Association was a great chance to make a difference for the student body.

Who is your most inspiring professor?

Dr. Hackemer has been a constant influence and mentor for me from the time I took my first class from him during my sophomore year. Whenever I have a question about school, life, or I just want to talk, Dr. Hackemer has been there for me. I strive to be like Dr. Hackemer when I go out into the real world.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan on either finding a high school history teaching job in South Dakota or continuing on with graduate school at USD.

Andrea Peterson '07

AndreaPeterson
Major:

History and German

Hometown:

Salem, South Dakota

Currently location:

Seattle, Washington

Why did you choose USD?

I chose USD for its personable nature. The class sizes are small, and the professors are always willing to meet with the students. In addition, I wanted to be able to stay close to my  father, but have a connection to the broader world. USD was able to provide that.

What or who inspired you to choose your major?
My experience with the history department during my freshman honors course inspired me to chose history. The German Department really made me feel welcome and helped me achieve fluency in another language and culture.

What was your favorite part about USD?
My favorite part was being able to work with my professors so closely. Having that one-on-one guidance was invaluable for my intellectual development.
How is USD different than other schools?
Never did I feel lost in the shuffle of tailoring my education to fit my needs.

What made a difference in your college experience?
The Honors Program provided the interdisciplinary approach I was looking for in my college education. My year in Oldenburg, Germany afforded me the opportunity to explore the greater world and immerse myself in a different culture.

What was your most inspiring class or professor?
My courses on U.S. diplomatic history were the most inspiring for me as they helped me realize how I could combine my love for history and apply it to the politics of international relations.

What are you doing now with your USD degree?
I am currently working for a multi-national consulting firm called FTI Consulting. The office I work for builds e-discovery software. I am also in the process of applying to graduate school for international affairs, specifically for U.S. Foreign Policy.

Andrea was awarded a grant through the Fulbright Program during her time at USD.
