Merten Hasse Competition

59th Merten Hasse Mathematics Contest
Saturday, March 29, 2014

The Math Department annually hosts the Merten Hasse Math Competition for area junior high and high school students. Schools earn points for each student who places in the top eight of the division exams. Participating schools are divided into one of two categories: Large Schools (200+) and Small Schools (199 and fewer).

Fractal Art

Following the individual exams Kevin J. Gross, a fractal artist, will show you and your students how applications of math can be used to produce stunning pieces of art. The talk will include a little history on fractals, Kevin's personal history with fractals, explanation of why fractals look so "natural", and where the math fits into his artwork.
