After graduation?I have a fellowship at the University of Nebraska to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics. |

Why did you choose USD?
I was interested in USD's strong academic background particularly in the Business School and the Political Science Department. However, after my first year, I discovered that those two fields were not for me. Therefore, I decided to pursue my true passion, mathematics.
What inspired you to choose Mathematics?Something about the logical structure of mathematics felt natural to me, and I desired to learn more about it. The mathematics faculty has inspired me to continue studying and researching math. |

What made a difference in your college experience?
Besides mathematics, I have really enjoyed the German Department (I am pursuing a minor in German). Another one of my passions is singing. I have been involved with college choirs ever since I came to USD. Currently, I am singing with the Concert Choir.
Who is your most inspiring professor?
Dr. Dan Van Peursem and Dr. Jose Flores have been influential in my development. I could not have won the Goldwater Scholarship without Dr. Catalin Georgescu's guidance. I am thankful to Dr. Istvan Gombocz of the German department for his passion for teaching German. Also, Dr. Yongchen Sun of Physics and Dr. David Burrow of History. There are too many good professors for me to list here.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to enter graduate school and attain my Ph.D. in mathematics.
Doug was awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in 2010. Read the press release.

What inspired you to choose Mathematics?
I credit being a math major to my favorite high school teacher. He had such a passion for mathematics that really stirred my own passion. Originally, I was just going to be a math minor, but after my first semester of math in college, I realized I couldn't imagine going a semester without math.
What is your favorite part about USD?I love how I am treated as a unique and significant individual to this University. I am recognized for my achievements, and my input is valued. This is not specific to me, but to all students. |

How is USD different than other schools?
There is always something going on at USD and there are always opportunities to get involved and meet new people, but I never feel lost in the crowd.
What did you take part in that made a difference in your college experience?
Joining Greek Life as well as participating in undergraduate research. I have met so many amazing men and women through Greek Life and had an instant support group. Undergraduate research allows me to develop relationships within my department and realize my goals beyond my undergraduate degree.
Who is your most inspiring professor?
I have done research with Dr. Catalin Georgescu in the mathematics department. I was curious as to how I could get involved with a cool project like so many of my friends in the biology and chemistry departments when Dr. Georgescu approached me. He helped me discover my passion for research and inspired me to be a better mathematician.
