Pursue Native Studies

Native Studies offers a program of study grounding students in the fundamentals of the discipline and preparing them for the challenges that are unique to Native Peoples and Native Country.  See our Undergraduate Catalog for more information.

This includes the nation-to-nation relationship that exists between Native Peoples and modern states and non-state actors. The students explore questions of major interest, providing opportunities for meaningful undergraduate research, and to engage questions unique to Native Country. The program also includes an optional specialization in either Oceti Sakowin Oyate Studies (People of the Seven Council Fires, more commonly known as the Dakota/Lakota/Nakota people) or Lakota Language.

We Offer:

Native Studies Major (36 hours) and Double Major (28 hours)

The general major requires 36 hours, including 20 hours of required core courses. Beyond the required core courses, students must complete sixteen (16) hours of electives from NATV of which at least nine hours must be at the upper division level courses (300-400). Our program hinges on versatility and flexibility, and is designed to enhance and be compatible with many disciplines as a double major. Students pursuing a native studies double major must complete the program's core requirements plus eight hours of electives. At least six of the eight electives must be at the upper division level.

Native Studies Minor (18 hours)

To earn a minor in native studies, students must complete 18 hours of NATV courses.
