Agency Description
The Siouxland Community Health Center provides primary health care services to individuals and seeks to address the major health problems of the community. Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other health professionals strive to prevent disease, promote health, and treat patients who are ill or injured. Working with other community groups, the Health Center develops and designs programs to improve community health based on individual needs.

Position Information
- Contract training site (contracted with USD)
- Stipend: $9,600 per 12 months
- Hours per week: 16 hours per week/4 weeks per month
- Number of placement positions: 1
- Estimated distance from Vermillion: 45 miles
- Prior training & experience required of trainees: assessment courses, basic therapy and diagnostic background, some pharmacology and substance use knowledge
- Prior training and experience preferred of trainees: master's degree completed, experience with minority populations and utilization of interpreters, second language, experience with Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), child and adult abuse reporting, family systems theory
- Strengths of this practicum experience: Unique opportunities for crisis intervention, working with physicians and physician assistants in a medical setting, diversity of ethnicities, fast-paced. Student learns to do quick assessments and to utilize brief interventions; sharpens the quick assessment skills without comfort of testing procedures. They improve knowledge of psychometrics.
- Additional comments: Many of SCHC patients struggle with history of physical/sexual abuse, substance abuse, and generational poverty and "entitlement" values. Becoming a "partner" with the medical provider is very important for successful and positive patient outcomes.
