Ross Haenfler graduated from USD in 1996 with a double major degree in sociology and psychology. He earned his PhD in sociology at the University of Colorado, and is now an associate professor of sociology at the University of Mississippi.
Haenfler studies social movements, deviance, youth subcultures, social change and gender. He is the author of several books, including Straight Edge: Clean Living Youth, Hardcore Punk, and Social Change (Rutgers); Goths, Gamers, and Girls: Deviance and Youth Subcultures (Oxford); Subcultures: The Basics (Routledge); and The Better World Handbook: Small Changes that Make a Big Difference (New Society).
In 2009, Haenfler won the College of Liberal Arts Teacher of the Year Award. An internationally recognized scholar of youth culture, Ross has shared his work in Estonia, Australia and Portugal.
