College of Arts & Sciences Women's Studies

Women's Studies

About the Program

We offer an 18-hour interdisciplinary minor that focuses on women as central participants in and subjects of the intellectual traditions that make up the liberal arts. Women's Studies minors apply a wide range of academic approaches and research methodologies to the study of women's experiences, values and identities.

The minor may accompany any major in the College of Arts and Sciences, and will be found particularly useful by students whose career goals demand high levels of analytical and critical thought and skills in interpersonal relations: hospital or school administration, business, consulting, counseling, education, human resources, journalism, law, medicine, psychology, religion, social work and sociology.

The Women's Studies minor may be earned with the B.S. or B.A. degree.

Women's Studies & Men

Women's Studies invites the men of The U to join them in recognizing the accomplishments, struggles, needs and unique conditions of women and the diverse boundaries and concerns of gender and sexuality by participating in the intellectual and cultural life of the program. We welcome the interest and support of all the members of the USD community.

Women's Studies & Feminism

Women's Studies recognizes that there still exist inequities in the representation of women in many academic disciplines; in support of and remuneration for women in diverse areas of work, intellectual endeavor and athletic achievement; and in women's representation within bodies at all levels of professional and civic governance. As a result, Women's Studies wholeheartedly claims to be feminist, where feminism names the belief that men's and women's experiences and issues deserve to be treated with equal attention (i.e., seriousness, funding and creativity) by public institutions and that no woman should suffer a deficit in opportunity, support, preparation or reward for reasons solely related to her sex.
