South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN)
is funded through the generous support of the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) Institutional
Development Award (IDeA) BRIN program.
The mission of the South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure
Network (BRIN) is to develop a Network within South Dakota to enhance
basic biomedical research capabilities. Our specific target is to
expand in the area of cell biology related to the control
of cell growth. To achieve this goal, SD BRIN targets three undergraduate
schools to begin developing human resource pipelines to the graduate
program at USDSM.
The undergraduate institutions as partner institutions are: Augustana
College of Sioux Falls, the premier private liberal arts
institution in South Dakota; Black
Hills State University of Spearfish, a small public institution
in western South Dakota; and Sisseton-Wahpeton
College in Agency Village, a small tribal college.
SD BRIN will begin the recruitment of South Dakota undergraduates
into biomedical research careers through developing strong collaborations
among and between faculty members at USDSM and those of our partner
institutions. Related, the BRIN will provide research opportunities
at USD for science faculty and undergraduate students from the partner
institutions to build collaborative research ties with USDSM researchers
through summer programs. The BRIN will also provide research support
to partner institutions, so that the research collaborations developed
through the BRIN with USDSM mentors can continue at their respective
campuses.
