Positive Impacts of the SD BRIN
  1. Two regular faculty members at BHSU have 25% release time to do research.
  2. One adjunct faculty member at BHSU has 50% salary to do research and to coordinate BRIN activities.
  3. Mass spectrometer purchased for BHSU.
  4. Undergraduate students involved in research with stipends and lab support at both BHSU and Augustana.
  5. Undergraduate students exposed to career opportunities at USDSM.
  6. Internet capabilities will be enhanced at Augustana and SWCC.
  7. Library databases and document delivery is enhanced at USD and library resources provided free to everyone at partner institutions.
  8. Polycom units will be purchased for priority of BRIN activities.
  9. New bioinformatics task force at USD has biomedical scientists and computer scientists working together.
  10. Proteomics core facility is being equipped and staffed at USDSM.
  11. Web resources for outreach in the sciences have been expanded and consolidated.
  12. Research faculty members at participating institutions are beginning to get to know each other.
  13. Graduate student stipends are available.
  14. New faculty members are being recruited and supported with start-up and annual funds for a number of years.
  15. NCBI workshop on bioinformatics will be supported by SD BRIN.
  16. Undergraduate training of science education majors will be enhanced by new faculty member.
  17. Funds are available for inviting in well-known speakers for seminars.
  18. Junior faculty members have been supported to meet with program officers of granting agencies.
  19. Two Native Americans (one from the tribal community college and one from BHSU) participated as undergraduate research fellows and a majority of the fellows were women (Augie and BHSU have 60% female students).
  20. Web site is developing resources for what large pieces of equipment are available to researchers in SD and which faculty members in the state are involved in which research areas.
  21. The increase in library resources at SWCC has been significant due to BRIN with the highest use of BRIN library resources among all campuses to date.
