Announcement:

Sean Flynn, double major in Economics and Political Science, has been named a 2007 Truman Scholar - the 11th in the University's entire history!

Buying a car, taking out a mortgage, starting your own business…all of these are economic decisions.  We make these decisions all the time – from the routine, like what to have for lunch – to the momentous, like whether to quit one job to relocate and begin another.

Businesses make these choices – how many workers to hire, what to produce, what price to charge – and so do governments.  The choices societies make determine who will be rich and who will be poor, who will eat and who will starve, who will live and who will die.

Economics is the science of choice and decisions.  Business leaders from all industries use economics to weigh the costs and benefits of a particular course of action.  The skills developed in the study of economics are invaluable in law, industry, finance, government, education, and other areas of business and civic life.

Prior to gaining admission to the Beacom School of Business and declaring a major, students complete the University's General Education requirements and the prerequisites necessary for acceptance. When you decide to major in Economics through the Beacom School of Business, you will be admitted as a pre-business student and must complete certain course requirements before you are allowed to enroll in upper-level business classes.  Students can also major in economics through the College of Arts and Sciences.
