About Healthcare Administration*

Healthcare is a business and, like every other business, it needs good management to keep it running smoothly. The term "medical and health services manager" applies to those professionals who plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the delivery of healthcare.  This industry is booming and is asking for new employees trained in business principles to join their healthcare systems immediately.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the field of healthcare management is expected to grow 116 percent from 2008-2018. The healthcare industry will continue to expand and diversify, requiring managers to help ensure smooth business operations.

Health administrators are leaders. They head up hospitals, physician group practices, nursing homes, and home health agencies. They also work in the public sector, for example, in health departments, or in the private sector, such as with pharmaceutical companies, health insurance providers, consulting firms, or companies that make medical supplies and equipment. Many graduates help to shape healthcare policy by pursuing careers with local, state or federal agencies (such as the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) or health-related national associations, such as the Red Cross or the American Hospital Association.

Prepare to launch your career in healthcare management by selecting the approach that provides specialized skills and knowledge essential to managing health-related organizations, something not always available in traditional management programs.  USD offers an undergraduate major, a minor, a master's level certificate, and a master's specialization degree.

The HSAD faculty bring to our classrooms a wealth of teaching expertise and knowledge in the field based on professional experience. Our faculty members are business experts, innovative teachers and dedicated mentors who instruct students on business methods and then apply their teaching through school-sponsored, student-run organizations. All of our faculty have many years of experience working in health care systems.

Student Organizations

Students gain hands-on experience, meet new friends, and share some fun outside the classroom through participation in student organizations. We encourage students to actively participate in student organizations as an excellent way to develop leadership skills and engage in experiential learning. Health Services Administration sponsors Healthcare Executives Advancing in Leadership (HEAL), a student-lead organization aimed to further increase each student's knowledge of the health care industry.

USD's health administration program is certified by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).  AUPHA is the premier certification authority in healthcare education in America.  USD's program is one of the few AUPHA certified programs located in a Business School.  Our emphasis on the business principles of the management of health systems gives our graduates an advantage when applying for jobs in business departments of health systems. The Beacom School of Business and our programs are accredited by the highest business accrediting authority (AACSB) in the world.  This certification and accreditation assures students that USD's program is of the highest quality.

Beacom School of Business has the capacity to award more than $400,000 in awards and scholarships each year. These funds are made available through the generous support of alumni and friends.
