Dr. James Elkins – Visiting Lecture on Art Criticism Dr. James Elkins earned his BA degree in English and Art History from Ithaca College, NY, and then attended the University of Chicago where he earned a graduate degree in painting and PhD in Art History. He is currently an E.C. Chadbourne Professor in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Elkins is a highly engaging speaker and prolific writer whose books include: Why Art Cannot be Taught: A Handbook for Art Students (2001), What Painting Is (2000), and Master Narratives and Their Discontents (Theories of Modernism and Postmodernism in the Visual Arts) (2005). He has been described as, "perhaps the most brilliant scholar working in his territory today", and, "perhaps the Anglophone world's leading concerned citizen regarding art criticism". Dr. Elkins will be speaking at USD in Old Main, Farber Hall, at 8 pm on November 5, 2009.
