H1N1 Home Page
As the seasonal flu and H1N1 virus impact the USD and Vermillion community, USD wants to make sure students, faculty, and staff are working together to keep our community safe and healthy and to ensure the academic success of our students.
H1N1 flu is the predominant flu virus circulating in the United States and South Dakota; therefore, the South Dakota Department of Health does not believe it is necessary to test everyone to find out which flu virus they have. Most normally healthy people with flu symptoms (fever of 100° or more with cough and/or sore throat) will recover by resting at home and drinking plenty of fluids. The Department of Health does recommend testing of those who are seriously ill or hospitalized. Individuals who have severe symptoms should seek medical care.
At USD, classroom management is a responsibility and right of the faculty. Therefore, USD does not offer excused absences for illness. (Senate policy does excuse absences for University-sponsored activities.) We encourage faculty to work with students who are ill, including of course those experiencing flu symptoms. If you are a student and miss class due to flu like symptoms, contact your course instructors as soon as possible to notify them of your absence and ask how you can make up any missed work.
Students who live on campus and have a meal plan may arrange for meal delivery. Please visit the Flu Meal Program web site at: http://www.usd.edu/campus-life/student-services/student-health-services/h1n1/flu-meal-program.cfm.
USD has created this web page and posted information on the portal with information related to the H1n1 virus. We encourage you to periodically view this site as well as information on the Center for Disease Control web page.
As a community, we will work together to minimize the spread and negative impact of the seasonal flu and H1N1 virus.
