fasd awareness day

September 9, 2008 is the 10th Annual International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day.  FASD Awareness Day is held on the ninth day of the ninth month as a reminder that women should not drink any alcohol during the dine months of pregnancy. NOFAS South Dakota Logo

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) . . .
  ~ is a term describing the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose
     mother drank alcohol during pregnancy.
  ~ are effects which may include physical, mental, behavioral, and/or learning
     disabilities with lifelong implications.
  ~ are 100% PREVENTABLE.

Center for Disabilities FASD Awareness Day Activities
In Sioux Falls, Center for Disabilities staff will distribute awareness day items in the Wegner Health Science Center.  Dr. Hoyme, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, will be presenting on FASD during Grand Rounds. Center for Disabilities staff will be presenting information on FASD prevention at middle and high schools.
In Rapid City, Center for Disabilities staff and parents of children with an FASD will be interviewed for by both newspapers and television stations.  Awareness Day items will be distributed to various medical offices which provide services to women.  Awareness Day bracelets will be distributed to area schools.  Area schools will be asked to ring their bells 9 times at 9:09 a.m. along with an announcement about FASD Awareness Day.
