NOFAS South Dakota will seek to improve FASD prevention efforts, to improve FASD identification efforts, and to improve the services and supports provided to individuals affected by FASD.
The term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) covers a wide range of effects which can occur in individuals born to mothers who drank alcohol during pregnancy. FASD is not a diagnostic term but rather an umbrella term used to encompass a variety of diagnoses. The following diagnostic categories were established by the Institutes of Medicine in their 1996 publication of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Diagnosis, Epidemiology, Prevention and Treatment.
All Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are caused by maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. While the effects of FASD are irreversible, it is important to remember that all FASD are 100% preventable. For more information contact: |
