Federal Work-Study is a financial need based award to eligible students enrolled at least half-time and who met the university's financial aid award criteria. Work-study gives you the opportunity to "earn as you learn." Individuals on the work-study program are paid on a monthly basis for hours worked. These funds should be considered to cover indirect costs since they are not available at the beginning of the term when fee payment is due. Most work-study awards are based on working approximately 10 hours per week.
You MUST have a work study award from Financial Aid to qualify for work-study. Awards are based on your applications for financial aid (FAFSA). If you have any questions concerning the award, contact the Financial Aid office at 605-677-5434. You will be issued a "yellow card" if you qualify, which you will need to present to employers before accepting a job. Financial Aid can issue you a new card if you misplaced the original one.
Work study job openings are posted below. To obtain a position, follow these steps:
1. Look through the available positions and make a list of the ones that interest you. Be sure to include the contact name and contact information for each position.
2. Contact the department you wish to work for and apply for the position.
3. Take the yellow card Financial Aid gave you to the department you are applying at to verify your work study eligibility.
4. Once hired, the hours per week are negotiated by the department staff. They are largely determined by the amount of work-study money awarded. For non work-study positions, the department's budget is the considering factor.
5. Remember that you are applying for a job. Create a good impression by being punctual and dressing appropriately.
