Susan Keith Gray is in demand as pianist, teacher, adjudicator and clinician. Acclaimed as a specialist in collaborative playing, she has performed in recital with a number of singers and instrumentalists throughout the United States and abroad and has served on the Instrumental Accompanying Faculty at the Music Academy of the West and on the staff of national music competitions. As a member of the Kobayashi/Gray Duo (violin/piano), she has toured South America and the West Indies as a United States Artistic Ambassador and in Norway and South Africa. Since 1993, the Duo has actively performed, premiered, edited and lectured about the music of 19th-21st century women composers, leading to publications and a CD recording of these works. In 2004, Gray toured throughout Taiwan with the University of South Dakota Rawlins Piano Trio. With this group, she as performed the complete Beethoven trios and has recorded two CDs of American piano trios. Other recordings include songs of African-American composers. Awards include prizes in the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Competition, and solo appearances with the Spartanburg (SC), Savannah (GA), Huron (SD) and USD Community and Chamber Orchestras. Gray holds degrees in Piano Performance from Converse College and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Chamber Music and Accompanying from The University of Michigan. A member of the faculty at the University of South Dakota since 1995, Gray is the 2005 recipient of the university’s prestigious Belbas-Larson Award for Excellence in Teaching.
