David Moskowitz holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Kansas, a master's degree in music history and a bachelor's degree in general studies (emphasis in violin and viola performance) from the Ohio University. His scholarly interests encompass African-American popular music, Latin American music, and music of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The research for his recently completed dissertation, "Robert Nesta 'Bob' Marley: Music, Text, and Context," took him to Jamaica, where he delved into reggae music and Rastafarianism.

Moskowitz has presented papers at several conferences, including regional meetings of the Society for Ethnomusicology, the College Music Society, and the International Conference on Mexican Music held at the University of Kansas. His paper "Iron, Lion, Zion: Biblical References in the Lyrics of Bob Marley" won the 2001 Paul Revitt Award at the annual Great Plains Chapter meeting of the College Music Society, Ethnomusicology.
