The University of South Dakota Rawlins Piano Trio: John Thomson, violin; Susan Keith Gray, piano; and Marie-Elaine Gagnon, cello.  The members of the Rawlins Trio are artist-teachers on the faculty of the university's Department of Music.

The Rawlins Piano Trio has formed a reputation as a preeminent interpreter of American music.  Owing to its expertise, the Trio has recorded three CD’s of these works and has been invited frequently to perform at the national conventions of the Society for American Music. The Trio’s most recent CD, American Romance, was released by Albany Records in 2004 and was declared, “A real find!” by reviewer J. Scott Morrison. A second performance specialty for the Trio is the complete Beethoven piano trio cycle which they have performed twice.

Founded in 1987, the Trio performs regularly throughout the United States and abroad, including prestigious concert series, television and radio broadcasts, appearances at conferences and educational outreach to young audiences. In December of 2004, the Trio made a successful concert and teaching tour throughout Taiwan. The Trio made a return visit to Taiwan to perform and give masterclasses in May of 2006. Active as teachers as well as performers, the artists are on the faculty of The University of South Dakota Department of Music.

The Trio is named in honor of Marjorie Rawlins and the late Robert Rawlins, its principal benefactors. Graduates of USD in the 1940s, the Rawlins have been significant supporters of the University and of the arts in South Dakota.

The Rawlins Graduate Fellowships in Piano, Violin, and Cello are awarded to entering or continuing master's degree students in the Department of Music.  The piano fellow and the two string fellows form the Townsley Graduate Piano Trio.  All three fellows study privately and as an ensemble with the members of the USD resident Rawlins Piano Trio.
