Description
Our class readings, discussions, and essays will center on the theme of "The Myth of the American Dream." We will carefully consider what the American Dream is, how this ideal initially developed, and how it has evolved over time. In examining its specific components in relation to freedom, success, education, work, and happiness, we will analyze specifically who can achieve this dream and who is excluded from it in terms of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and citizenship. We will question if Americans still believe in this myth and if it is attainable. Over the semester, we will critique the depiction of the American Dream in various media, including but not limited to advertisements, political campaigns, movies, art, and literature. Ultimately, we will develop arguments based on our critical interpretations of this myth in relation to our own identities and personal and professional aspirations, critiquing how these private actualities align with the perpetuated myth of the American Dream.

Description
How does Apple convince us that we need an iPhone 5 (and keep us dreaming about the day we upgrade to the iPhone 6)? How does advertising shape our media? How does our consumption of STUFF influence our lives and culture? In this class, our readings, discussions, and essays will center on questions like these as we explore the theme of "Examining Advertising and Consumer Culture: Thinking Critically about Why We Buy STUFF." We will employ critical thinking skills and media analysis to consider advertising in its many forms:  TV commercials, radio spots, product placement in movies, billboards, magazines, those annoying pop-up ads, and other media such as TV's Mad Men. Our interdisciplinary lens will allow us to investigate the social, cultural, political, economic and historical impact of advertising on individuals, societies and the world. We will uncover how advertising works, and over the course of the semester we will write extensively about advertising, consumer culture and the STUFF we love to buy.

Description
Once found only on the dining room table or living room floor, games are now played in an ever wider variety and venue. From the arcade, to the couch, to the smart phone, we game everywhere. In this class we will undertake a multidisciplinary exploration of the increasing presence, proliferation, and influence of games on individuals and culture, to peek behind the dice and digital bits and see what is at play in America's new national pastime. We will ask:  what is a game? What is the history of gaming? How do games tell stories?  Why do we play games?  What do games do for us and to us when we play them? And, can gaming change the world? Through a dynamic selection of readings, films, and game texts (including computer, board, arcade, rpg games) we will explore the role games play in our lives and culture.

Student Identity Verification Measures
  • All online classes are password protected.  Students must provide name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their social security number, to receive an email and password from the University of South Dakota.  Access to online courses is managed through USD systems only and not a student's personal email.
  • Assessment of student learning in online classes often assists in student identity verification.  Many tests are proctored in person by University employees at the University's statewide higher education centers in Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls, SD, and in Vermillion, SD, at the Division of Continuing and Distance Education.  Students in other states make application for a professional proctor in their region who is approved by the University of South Dakota in advance of testing.  The Proctor Application can be found by logging into myU. Portal: Distance > Student Support > Proctor / Testing Info.  University staff evaluates carefully the proposed proctors assessing potential conflicts of interest.  Approved proctors verify student identity prior to each test.
  • Finally, a growing number of online courses supplement instruction with web conferencing.  This technology allows the professor to further authenticate identity through voice recognition and visual recognition if webcams are used.
