COMMON TRYOUT QUESTIONS
1. I have never taken
dance classes or been on a dance team before. Can I still try out?
♦YES!!! There are several girls that have
been on the team and that are currently on the team that have
never had dance experience before.
Gymnastics and cheerleading are two similar and helpful experiences.
And even if you've never done any of
those, you never know what you can do until you try!
2.
How many dancers do you take?
♦While there is no set number for U-Dance, the team
is normally made up of 15-18 dancers. At theauditions, the judges and captains usually go by the
natural cut-off in the scores to determine how many dancers are on the team.
3. What should I wear for the audition?
♦In order to see the lines of your
body and the extension of your movements, we recommend that you wear
clothing that is fitting to your
body. If you are hiding under sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt, we can't see
what you're doing. Black pants
and tank tops are always good selections. It is also recommended to pull
some or all of your hair back and
wear light make-up.
4.
What should I do to prepare for the auditions?
♦Stretching would be our top recommendation. A few weeks before the
auditions (or sooner, if you prefer),
start by warming up your muscles and
doing a good stretch. Sit in your splits to work on your flexibility.
Practice your toe touches, leaps,
turns, and anything else you think will help. And this may sound silly,
but
practice your facial expressions in
the mirror. Smiling is the easiest part of the audition!
5.
I can't attend the spring auditions, but I know I want to dance here. What
should I do?
♦Contact
us and we can
possibly arrange a private tryout. If that doesn't work, there are also
the fall auditions.
6.
What if I don't make the team in the spring? Is there no hope for me?
♦ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! The judges are generally a little pickier during spring
auditions. If we don't pick
you the first time, PLEASE come back
for fall tryouts (held in mid-September). Every year, there are a
couple girls who aren't quite ready
in the spring that we take in the fall. If you practice over the summer,
you will be successful in the fall.
And then we know that you really want to be on our team!
