Who is eligible?
The clinic serves all children in the Sioux Falls area from birth to age 21 who have speech and language disorders. Children will be considered for services without regard to family income or geographic boundaries.

About the staff:
Graduate students in the Communication Disorders Program at the University of South Dakota provide services under the supervision of the clinic coordinator, who is a member of the USD faculty and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Through training and experience, the staff knows and understands the unique needs of children and families when communication skills do not develop as expected.

Services Provided at the Clinic
At the center, complete speech and language evaluations are offered. Evaluation results determine the need for a short or long term treatment program, which may also be offered at the clinic. Treatment is provided through individual or group sessions which are 30-50 minutes in length. Frequency of sessions depends on individual need. The clinic can be the primary service provider for a child, or can offer supportive services in conjunction with other private or public agencies, such as schools. In addition to evaluation and treatment of children, parental counseling and training is emphasized. Services are provided for the following areas:

  • speech articulation
  • language (receptive and expressive)
  • fluency (stuttering)
  • voice
  • oral motor/feeding

Also available:

  • pure tone hearing screenings
  • impedance screenings

The Referral Process
A phone call or letter for the parent is all that is needed to initiate the application process. Inquiries are encouraged from physicians, health professionals, therapists, friends and relatives to determine when a referral may be appropriate.

The Hanen Program
The clinic is certified to offer the Hanen Parent Program. These formal classes help parents learn how to promote their child's language development during everyday interactions, activities, and routines. The Hanen Parent Programs also serve as a support group for parents with language delayed children. As part of the Hanen Program, a free parent resource library is available at the clinic, where parents may check out books and video tapes related to their children's communication development.

Fees
A modest fee is charged for evaluation and treatment services. The clinic is a non-profit agency. No individuals will be denied services due to an inability to pay.

A Commitment to Children
Nationwide a major thrust for the philanthropic work of the Scottish Rite Masons has been the support of
Childhood Speech & Language Disorders Programs. Across the United States, Scottish Rite programs are dedicated to the treatment of speech and language disordered children.

These children are often frustrated by their inability to communicate at a level equal to their peers. With systematic teaching and family involvement, speech and language disordered children can be helped.

In a joint effort, the University of South Dakota and the Scottish Rite Foundation of South Dakota have made a strong commitment to speech and language disordered children. Located in the Masonic Temple in Sioux Falls, the clinic facilities are modern, cheerful and specially designed for the treatment of children. USD faculty and graduate students provide treatment with up-to-date materials and therapy procedures. Services are funded through the efforts of the Scottish Rite Foundation of South Dakota and the University of South Dakota. Additionally, the clinic is proud to be an affiliated agency of the Sioux Empire United Way.
