Disaster Preparedness

The Bulgarian Red Cross is the only non-governmental organization which is included in the national system providing protection to the population in case of natural and technological disasters in time of peace and war. It is represented in the Permanent Commission at the Council of Ministers, for protection of the population against natural and technological disasters.

The Bulgarian Red Cross, in cooperation and interaction with the Ministry of Defence, Civil Protection, Ministry of Interior and other governmental institutions, trains medical and first aid units on a large scale; the population, voluntary structures, etc. to render emergency first self-aid and mutual aid in case of disaster. The Bulgarian Red Cross elaborates plans of action in case of emergency; training programmes; collects its own emergency supplies and material resources; takes part in training exercises jointly with governmental and public structures related to the matters of defence and disaster preparedness.

The Bulgarian Red Cross, with its own human and material resources, is prepared to respond if a disaster strikes, and to provide assistance to those in need, in terms of the necessary shelter and food for a certain number of victims.

The Bulgarian Red Cross guarantees the correct organisation of the reception and distribution of foreign humanitarian aid.
