National Red Cross and
Red Crescent Societies


National Societies are voluntary relief organizations in each country, officially recognized and carrying out their activities on the territory of the respective country. They are the great inspirator of the ideas of voluntary service and unity. Their main activities are as follows:
- Training of health care personnel, including nurses and health officers to give first aid; social workers, etc. to work on the programmes of the National Society, and which in time of war assist the medical services of the armed forces;
- Aid to victims of natural disasters; disaster preparedness and programmes for disaster prevention;
- Prevention of diseases, health and hygiene care through training and practical activities; promotion of blood donation;
- Social assistance to individuals and the most vulnerable groups of the population;
- Youth training in each of the above activities, and designing of special youth programmes;
- Dissemination and popularization of the Fundamental Principles of the Movement, and the rules of the International Humanitarian Law.
