Practicum in Disaster Response
PSYC 359
This is a field experience course requiring students to volunteer as American Red Cross disaster relief personnel in actual disaster responses, either within South Dakota, or as members of the Red Cross Disaster Services Human Resources (national disaster team). These responses can be completed in the students¹ own time frame, including the summer. Students may also substitute other volunteer work for the disaster hours. These arrangements need to be negotiated between the student and a DMHI faculty member, but some minimum level of actual disaster response will be required for satisfactory completion of the course requirements. This course is open to all students, but does not count toward the Psychology major or minor. This course does count toward the Minor in Disaster Response and the Psychology Major Area of Concentration. Prerequisite: PSYC 255, permission of instructor.
This course is an elective for the undergraduate Minor in Disaster Response and the Psychology Major Area of Concentration in Disaster Response.
This course received final approval from the South Dakota Board of Regents January 21, 1999.
