PSYC 782:
This course reviews research design and methodology as applied to psychotherapy techniques. Prerequisite: PSYC 783 - Psychotherapy Techniques with Adults, or permission of the instructor.
More specifically, this course will primarily center on teaching students to think critically and scientifically about clinical psychological practice. Students will learn about clinical decision making, theory on communication, argumentation and persuasion theory as related to arriving at clinical decisions, and the common errors made in conceptualizing patients’ mental health problems and in deciding on assessment and treatment strategies. Additionally, the philosophy of evidence-based practice will be discussed, as a means of demonstrating the concrete link between science and practice. Finally, research design and methodology in assessing therapeutic change will be discussed. Thus the link between scientific thinking and clinical practice will be emphasized throughout this course (i.e., scientist-practitioner model).
