A Writing Retreat for South Dakota Teachers

Write to your heart’s content on a topic of your choice. Would you like to write about your classroom practice? Would you like to work on that novel or short story that’s been simmering in the back of your brain? Or maybe you would like to experiment with writing poetry, a play, a biography, or something else entirely different that interests you.

Now, you have the opportunity to do just that at the Dakota Writing Project 2008 Writing Retreat, designed specifically for teachers. Teachers will enjoy “chunks” of time in which to write, interwoven with time for discussion and feedback on their writing from their fellow teacher-writers. Leading this retreat will be DWP teacher-consultants Jeannette Jennings and Anne Moege, who attended National Writing Project writing retreats in Arizona and Nebraska and who participated in a local Dakota Writing Project writing retreat last year.

Teachers share their writing and offer feedbackThe retreat will be held from 6 p.m. central on Thursday, March 6, 2008 until 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Lincoln Bed & Breakfast in Stickney, South Dakota. (If there is a blizzard, the retreat will be held March 13-15.) Meals and lodging are included in the price of the retreat. The retreat is limited to six participants, to help create a close-knit community of writers and to allow for individual attention to each person’s writing.

Interested teachers must register by February 25 (postmark date), first come, first serve. Please send a letter of one to two pages in which you address the following items:

  1. Describe yourself as a teacher. What do you teach (grade levels and subjects)? Where do you teach, and how long have you been teaching?
  2. Describe yourself as a writer. What has been your experience with writing and/or publishing? What issues with writing are a special concern for you? (Beginners as well as more experienced writers are welcome, of course.)
  3. Describe your retreat project. What will be your writing focus for the retreat?
  4. Include your mailing address, phone number(s), and email address.

Please send by February 25 the letter with a registration fee of $360 in a check or money order made out to the Dakota Writing Project, to: Dakota Writing Project, Dakota Hall 212, University of South Dakota, 414 E. Clark Street, Vermillion, SD 57069-2390.

One hour of graduate credit (ENGL 592) is available from the University of South Dakota for an additional $40. E-mail dwp@usd.edu for more information.

Participants will be contacted with details shortly before the retreat. If you have questions about the retreat, e-mail DWP director Michelle Rogge Gannon at dwp@usd.edu.

You can also view a digital story about the 2007 DWP writing retreat and read Jeannette Jennings' article about participating in both the DWP 2007 Stickney Retreat and the NWP 2007 Writing Retreat in Arizona.

The Dakota Writing Project (DWP) believes that teachers who write become more effective teachers of writing. For more information about the DWP, visit our main page.
