Welcome to The University of South Dakota Reading Recovery® Training Center

The University of South Dakota is one of the twenty-four training centers that offers graduate coursework in Reading Recovery techniques. The University Training Center is licensed to use the Reading Recovery trademark and to train Teacher Leaders and Reading Recovery Teachers. The University Training Center operates as a regional training site.

More than 46,600 children have benefited from specialized reading instruction provided by Reading Recovery Teachers and Teacher Leaders who are affiliated with The University of South Dakota Regional Reading Recovery Training Center.  These teachers and teacher leaders work in schools in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.  Click on the state name for the Special State Edition of LITERACY SOLUTIONS, the Reading Recovery Training Center newsletter.  State data from 2007-2008 can be found on pages two and three of each state edition.

Reading Recovery is a highly successful research-based intervention that supplements classroom instruction.  It is designed for the lowest achieving students in first grade.  In this short-term intervention, highly trained teachers conduct daily one-to-one lessons with the most at-risk students.  Reading Recovery's success has been demonstrated in a wide range of educational settings.

Training to become a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader involves a commitment to one year of intensive study followed by monthly professional development sessions.  Training is conducted by a registered University Trainer and involves successful completion of 20 credit hours of post-Masters Degree graduate level Reading Recovery work.  During this time, Teacher Leaders in training work with four Reading Recovery children each day and participate in weekly classes at a licensed University Reading Recovery Training Center.  The University of South Dakota Reading Recovery Training Center is beginning recruitment for a Reading Recovery teacher and teacher leader training class for next year.  Scholarships are available and some of the Training Center fees will be waived.  Please contact the Training Center for more information.

Training to become a Reading Recovery Teacher entails a commitment to one year of intensive study followed by monthly continued professional development sessions.  Training is conducted by registered Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders or a registered University Trainer and involves successful completion of 8 credit hours of graduate level Reading Recovery work.  During the training, teachers work in their school districts in at least half-time positions as Reading Recovery Teachers and participate in weekly classes at a training site.  Teachers in training will also have half of their assigned duties outside of Reading Recovery. The University of South Dakota Reading Recovery Training Center is beginning recruitment for a Reading Recovery teacher and teacher leader training class for next year.  Scholarships are available and some of the Training Center fees will be waived.  Please contact the Training Center for more information.

Each fall the Center sponsors a Reading Recovery Institute for Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders and Teachers.  Dr. Judy Embry, Dr. Mary Lose, and Dr. Garreth Zalud, Reading Recovery trainers, were the featured presenters for the 2008 Fall Institute.  Page one of the current edition of LITERACY SOLUTIONS, the Center's newsletter, has pictures and a recap of the Institute.

Reading Recovery students throughout South Dakota are participating in Christmas at the Capitol
Each year the South Dakota state capitol is filled with beautifully trimmed Christmas trees.  The nearly 100 trees are decorated by businesses, nonprofit organizations, communities, and governmental offices from throughout the state.  Reading Recovery is proud to have been included in this year’s celebration.  “Sharing Holiday Messages” was the theme for this year’s Christmas at the Capitol event.  Reading Recovery students write daily, so it seemed appropriate to feature their holiday messages on the Reading Recovery tree.  Students from throughout the state wrote holiday messages, and ornaments made from their writing adorn the tree.

Analyzing and Goal Setting With Site Reports was presented by Dr. Garreth Zalud, Dr. Janet Petersen, and Mary Collins at the 2009 National Reading Recovery and K - 6 Classroom Literacy Conference in Columbus, Ohio on February 10, 2009.  The purpose of the 90-minute session was to examine the annual site report in careful detail in order to set goals for continuous improvement.  A portion of the presentation, Analyzing and Goal Setting with Site Reports, is available for your perusal.
