The School of Education's program is organized into four divisions:
Admission Criteria:

Education majors interested in teaching are admitted to teacher education programs when they've completed 45 hours, if they meet the following criteria:

  • A pre-professional interview including biographical information
  • Completion of an oral communication course
  • Passing scores on the Pre-Professional Skills Test
  • Completion of the introductory course work
  • Proficient in appropriate technology
  • Faculty recommendations
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.6
  • Satisfactory evaluation in at least one paraprofessional or field experience
Education Areas
  • Elementary Education
    • Extensive pre-teaching experience in the classroom is followed by 14 weeks of student teaching.
    • Students may add on a Kindergarten or Early Childhood Endorsement.
  • Secondary Education
    • Actual high school classroom activities and classroom observations beginning in the sophomore year and extensive classroom teaching experience in the senior year.
    • Certifications are for grades 7-12 in a specific academic subject area or K-12 in art, music or physical education.
    • Most secondary majors have at least one teaching minor.
  • Special Education
    • Students majoring in special education do so as a double major with either elementary or secondary education, receiving a basic elementary or secondary certificate with a second major for K-12 special education.
    • Students spend two semesters in student teaching: one in regular classroom and one in a special education setting.
  • Certification Only Program
    • This program is designed for students who have already completed a degree in a content major.
    • Through this program students earn teacher certification in an expedited fashion.
