The administrative internship is designed to prepare students for assuming the role of a school administrator through completion of practical field-based experiences under the joint supervision of an on-site licensed school administrator and a member of the USD EDAD faculty. The administrative internship is structured to enable each student to develop and put into practice an individualized field-based experience that focuses primarily on either elementary principal, secondary principal, superintendent, or director of special education preparation. The standards for school leaders developed by the AASA, NASSP, NAESP, ASCD, NPBEA, ISLLC, and NCATE serve as a basis for supplementing the theoretical knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions developed through EDAD coursework.
Requirements and documentation for administrative internships in elementary school principalship, secondary school principalship, school district superintendency, and special education director are outlined in internship packets and portfolio packets available through the Division of Educational Administration. The administrative internship is typically taken for three credits and requires 180 clock hours of activities and contact at the appropriate school or district setting under the direction of a field-based supervisor. The portfolio includes a reflective journal of activities and supporting documentation related to the activities completed during the internship experience. The culminating activity of the internship is a portfolio review at which the student meets with an EDAD faculty member and field-based practitioner to discuss the recently completed internship experience.
