Scholarships

The Division of Educational Administration offers scholarship opportunities to students currently enrolled in the Educational Administration K-12 (EDAD) and Adult and Higher Education (AHED) programs.

Dr. H. C. "Rus" Rustad Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility:  K-12/AHED
This endowed scholarship was established in 1993 by his doctoral advisees, EDAD faculty, the School Administrators of South Dakota, friends and family members. Dr. Rustad was a professor of Educational Administration at the University of South Dakota from 1968-1973 and later returned to USD following a twelve year tenure as an administrator with the Sioux Falls School District. Dr. Rustad served from 1971-1973 as the first Executive Director of the School Administrators of South Dakota. 

Dr. Harry Dykstra Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12/AHED
This endowed scholarship was established in 1981 by Dr. Harry Dykstra's family. He was a USD School of Education faculty member from 1956 until his death in 1979. Dr. Dykstra taught courses in educational administration and served as a consultant to school boards throughout South Dakota during the school district reorganization years.

Dr. Jan Ebersdorfer Women in Administration Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12/AHED - Women
This endowed scholarship was established in 1996 by former advisees, faculty, friends and family of Dr. Jan Ebersdorfer. The scholarship honors her twenty-four years (1972-1996) as a faculty member at the USD School of Education. Dr. Ebersdorfer taught courses in administration of special education, served in a leadership role for governmental entities, and was active in numerous professional organizations.

James W. Flevares Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12/AHED
This endowed scholarship was established in 1988 by his brother, Constantine W. Flevares, M.D. of Warren Ohio. James W. Flevares, a graduate of USD, was a teacher, coach and school administrator in South Dakota public schools for over 30 years. During that time, he served school districts in Tyndall, Tripp, McIntosh, and Bon Homme. He was stricken with a fatal heart attack in March of 1988, while serving as the Bon Homme Superintendent of Schools. This scholarship was established as a memorial to him, to his dedication and tireless efforts to improve educational opportunities for the youth of South Dakota. 

Dr. Frederic J. Petersen North Central Association Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12/AHED
This endowed scholarship was established in 1982 and 1987 to honor Dr. Fred Petersen, longtime faculty member in the School of Education and former State Director of the North Central Association. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student in education who has three or more years of work experience in an educational setting and who is specializing in either Adult and Higher Education or Educational Administration. 

Dr. Shawn P. Winthers Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12 Administration
This endowed scholarship was established in 2013 by Dr. Shawn P. Winthers' family. The recipient must have a demonstrated interest in teaching or administration at the K-12 level in the state of South Dakota and must be a resident of South Dakota. 

Dr. Leroy Nelson Distinguished Service Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12 Administration 
This endowed scholarship was established in 1990 by the faculty and graduates in Educational Administration. Dr. Nelson was the first chair of the Department of Educational Administration and continued in that position until his retirement in 1979. 

Dr. Perry L. Uhl Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12 Administration
This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 by family, friends, former students and colleagues of Dr. Perry Uhl. The scholarship honors his nearly forty year commitment to excellence in education. Dr. Uhl served Iowa schools as a teacher, principal and superintendent for 28 years and had been a USD professor for eleven years teaching courses in educational administration. Dr. Uhl served as a consultant to school boards and school districts in Iowa and South Dakota on numerous occasions. Dr. Uhl was Director of the South Dakota LEAD project for seven years and was well respected by school administrators for sharing his expertise and knowledge about school personnel, school finance, school law, and school administration. This scholarship will be given to a graduate student pursuing a degree in Educational Administration in the program for educational leadership. 

Dr. Phil Vik Leadership Scholarship

Eligibility: K-12 Administration
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 by former advisees, faculty, NCA, friends and family of Dr. Phil Vik. The scholarship honors his twenty-three years (1975-1998) as a faculty member and Chair of Educational Administration since 1979 at the USD School of Education. Dr. Vik taught courses in elementary administration, supervision, elementary curriculum, and theory in educational administration. This scholarship will be awarded to a student in the elementary principal program or to an active elementary school principal. 

One Room Rural School Teacher Commemorative Scholarship

Eligibility: Undergraduate Education Major
