What is Exercise Science?
Exercise Science is a discipline based on the scientific principles that underlie human movement, and requires the development of basic skills in:
- exercise assessment, prescription and programming in healthy and special populations
- enhancement in coaching or specializing in human performance
In recent years, the public has recognized that adopting a lifestyle combining regular physical activity with good nutrition reduces the risk of death or debilitation from cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes. As a result, employment opportunities in exercise science and related health fields have increased dramatically.
- Approximately 50% of our graduates enter other health related professional programs in Physical Therapy, Medicine, Chiropractic, Physician Assistant OR enter graduate school
- The other 50% of grads enter the exercise science field directly in areas such as: strength and conditioning, corporate fitness, community health and wellness, or personal training.
The University of South Dakota Exercise Science Specialization has been endorsed by The National Strength & Conditioning Association as an "Education Recognized Program" and is valid until 2015
Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Science. We have a new undergraduate and graduate program that continuously challenges students to make connections between theoretical frameworks and practical applications. Our division has dynamic faculty who are dedicated towards teaching with the primary aim of engaging students in the learning process. The curriculum integrates biological and behavioral approaches using biomechanical, physiological, psychological, and sociological perspectives to understand human movement. Internships and practicums are required for students to gain hands-on experience for future graduate or professional careers. Our majors prepare for professional programs in the areas of exercise science, physical education teacher education, and sport management. If you have any questions about the major or the areas of specializations, please email me @ Andrew.Shim@usd.edu.
