Training

High quality teaching and fidelity in the implementation of the program are a hallmark of Reading Recovery.  Training to become a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader requires a commitment to one year of intensive study followed by monthly professional development sessions.  Through face-to-face and online class sessions, prospective Teacher Leaders complete a course of study that includes examination of the research and theory that supports Reading Recovery; coaching and mentoring teachers; implementation of Reading Recovery; and the clinical teaching of children.  Training is completed at the Reading Recovery Regional Training Center on the campus of The University of South Dakota. 

Candidates for training to become a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader are expected to:

  • Hold an earned Master's degree and teacher certification
  • Demonstrate evidence of successful teaching experience in literacy
  • Have 3-5 years of teaching experience preferably with primary aged children
  • Be nominated by an administrative agency with an employment commitment to the agency following completion of the training
  • Be released from duties outside of Reading Recovery for the training year
  • Be accepted by the University Training Center based upon application toe the Graduate School and to the program

Candidates for training to become a Reading Recovery Teacher are expected to:

  • Be employed as a Reading Recovery teacher with a 1/2 time commitment to Reading Recovery
  • Be accepted by the University Training Center based upon application to the Graduate School and to the program
