If you're an undergraduate student at the University of South Dakota majoring in English or English education--or planning to do so--consider applying for a Sanger scholarship. USD English majors (including double majors) and English Education majors, as well as high schools seniors who have applied to USD and declared English or English ed. as a major, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. It's a great way to reduce the cost of your tuition and add a line on your résumé.
Each year, we hand out many Sanger
scholarships to deserving English majors. Awards are typically between
$200 and $700 each. This tuition scholarship is applied toward your
tuition for
the following year at USD. The amount of each scholarship and number of
scholarships given depends on the amount available in the scholarship fund
and the number of quality applications that we receive.
How to apply: English/English
ed. majors need to submit a completed application (online
format or Adobe
Acrobat Reader format*), which includes a personal statement and two
recommendations (online
format or Adobe
Acrobat Reader format*) from faculty, preferably in the English
Department,
by
March 1. A faculty committee appointed by the chair then selects
recipients.

About the Sanger Scholarship: Margaret B. Miller Sanger, in whose name the scholarships are awarded, majored in English at USD, receiving her B.A. in 1908 and her M.A. in 1910. Mrs. William H. Beattys (Helen Miller, sister to Margaret), who left the bequest, graduated in 1912 from USD. The two sisters attended the University Preparatory School prior to enrolling in the University and both were members of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.
Helen and Margaret Miller were reared in Vermillion. The family home was the farm at the foot of the hill at the south end of University Street. Because their home was so near the hill, it was referred to as Miller Hill in the 1890s and early 1900s. To some Vermillion folk even today, it is still "Miller Hill."
