The Encyclopedia of the Roman Provinces

The Plan of the Encyclopedia

The encyclopedia, which was launched with its initial articles in the summer of 1998 was to consist of scholarly articles for each of the provinces of the Roman Empire. An editorial board was to review the articles for quality, content, and appropriate multimedia presentation. Standards are as high as for any print publication, and the encyclopedia enjoys regular updates as traditional publications cannot.

The encyclopedia will be useful for all levels of students of the Roman Empire, whether they are in the schools or in college or graduate school; for their teachers; and for scholars.  The authors of individual articles will be available for contact by e-mail and agree to respond promptly and generously so that students and teachers can continue to benefit from their expertise.

The following provinces are complete or in preparation.  Due to the difficulty of recruiting authors, the project has been in hiatus.  Scholars interested in reviving and contributing to the encyclopedia should contact Clayton Miles Lehmann, the Managing Editor.
