I am a native of Vermillion, SD and received my B.S. in Business Administration from USD in May 1993. (Studying the field of business was a natural for me as my parents own Wilson Florist and my in-laws own Davis Pharmacy.) I went to graduate school and studied finance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, receiving my MBA in May 1996 and my Ph.D. in December 1997. My dissertation research dealt with empirically testing the fundamental value hypothesis in agricultural land markets using a variety of empirical techniques. I am actively publishing, and my current interests lie in the areas of
financial statement restatements, using technology to enhance teaching, fair value pricing, portfolio optimization, exchange-traded mutual funds, and corporate bankruptcy prediction.

I regularly teach Investments, Security Analysis and Managerial Finance (MBA course), and I am currently serving as the Director of USD’s MBA program (www.usd.edu/business/mba ).  I serve the Business School Assessment Committee and USD’s Graduate Council, and am the Academic Program Coordinator for the finance department (www.usd.edu/finance ).   I am chair of the South Dakota Investment Council, and I serve on the Sioux Falls Firefighters’ Pension Board as well as the Sioux Falls Area   Community Foundation Investment Management Committee.  However, I most enjoy serving as a faculty advisor for the Financial Management Association (www.usd.edu/business/fma), Coyote Investment Club (www.usd.edu/business/invest), and Coyote Capital Management (www.usd.edu/business/coyotecapital).

I grew up in Singapore, and came to the USA to do an MBA at Purdue University. Upon the completion of my MBA, I returned to Singapore and worked as a corporate loan officer.  After spending a couple of years in the corporate world, I decided to have a career change and came back to the USA to pursue a Ph.D. in Finance.  I received my Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in December 1997.  Prior to coming to USD, I taught finance courses at San Francisco State University.  Some of the research issues that I am currently working on are: the impacts of government intervention on stock markets, evaluation of the effectiveness of quantitative investment strategies, and the impacts of corporate policies on the wealth of shareholders.  In my free time, I enjoy swimming, watching financial news and professional football on TV and travel.

Greetings!  My name is Angela Olson and I am an Accounting and Finance Instructor at the University of South Dakota (USD).  I am pleased to be teaching at USD, as this is where my stomping grounds were.  I went to USD for my Undergraduate and Graduate degrees.  I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) in May of 1999 and my Masters in Professional Accountancy (MPA) in December 2002.
I am originally from Luverne, MN, which is about 25 miles east of Sioux Falls, SD.  As stated above, I attended USD after high school and pursued my accounting degrees.  I really enjoyed USD because I felt like I received an outstanding educational experience that prepared me thoroughly for my career.  I feel honored to now be part of that teaching faculty.
While studying part-time for my MPA, I worked full-time as an auditor for McGladrey & Pullen, LLP in Sioux Falls, SD.  I audited manufacturing firms, non-profit entities, and governmental entities.  I also prepared tax returns for individuals, partnerships, and corporations.  I like to bring my auditing and tax experience to the classroom to enlighten students with real world examples and scenarios.  While working for McGladrey & Pullen, LLP, I obtained my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate.
After working for McGladrey & Pullen, LLP, I took up private accounting.  I worked for the South Dakota Investment Council as an Investment Accountant.  This job entailed retirement accounting for the South Dakota Retirement System.  The Investment Council invests State of South Dakota employees' money for retirement.  As an Investment Accountant, I was able to work with many different brokers in the Finance industry and gain substantial knowledge in Finance.  While working for the Investment Council, I passed the Level I Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam.
After obtaining my MPA degree, I decided that I wanted to turn my career to teaching post-secondary education.  I taught many different accounting and business courses at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls, SD.  Specific courses included Principles of Accounting I & II, Income Tax Accounting, Personal Finance, and Financial Management.  I discovered that teaching was my passion, and I enjoyed teaching others.
In the summer of 2004, I received an opportunity to return to USD.  I am currently an Instructor of Accounting and Finance, and I teach BADM 310, ACCT 211, and ACCT 310.  Besides teaching, I am serving as co-advisor for the Accounting Club and serving as a faculty advisor to the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Chief Financial Officer.  I enjoy serving the student organizations because they are a wonderful opportunity for the students to become involved on campus and with the business world.  I am also an academic advisor for 22 students, leading them in the right direction towards a college degree and great educational experience.
My research interests include financial accounting and students' perceptions of the accounting industry after the accounting scandals.  I am currently co-authoring a paper regarding student attitudes towards the accounting profession.  My future plans include obtaining my PhD in Accounting and advancing my career at USD as an Assistant Professor in Accounting.
On a personal note, I am married to Tony Olson, and we have one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Olson.  Tony and I were high school sweethearts and have been married for six years.  Tony is a firefighter for the Air National Guard in Sioux Falls, SD.  Our daughter, Elizabeth, is 15 months old and into everything!  She enjoys reading books, playing with her daycare friends, watching Baby Einstein movies, and emptying every cupboard and drawer possible!  Tony, Elizabeth, and I currently live in Garretson, SD, which is 20 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, SD.  We enjoy Garretson, as the town is a small community with very friendly residents.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, spending time with my family and friends, reading, and cooking/baking.
Accounting and Finance are my passion, and I couldn't be more pleased to get the opportunity to share my knowledge with the students at USD.  I look forward to meeting you!
