(1) Tuition is the price paid for direct instruction.  Eighty percent of the tuition collected goes to the Board of Regents System Fund, which is used to support instructional costs.  Twenty percent goes to the Higher Education Facilities Fund, which is used for the purchase and maintenance of facilities.  These revenues are then allocated back to all six state universities.

The General Activity Fee or (GAF) supports co-curricular and extra curricular activities at USD.  Examples: Student Government Association, Volante, Campus Recreation, Athletics, Fine Arts,  Child Care Center, Student Health, Wellness Center.

The University Support Fee or (USF) funds administrative and service areas of USD.  This includes construction and maintenance of buildings, as well as the areas listed below. 

  • Instructional and Academic Support: Computing Services, Ed Media, Academic Advising and testing, Libraries, General Support.
  • Student Services: Financial Aid, Career Development Center, Student Counseling Center, General Support.
  • Institutional Support: Finance and Administration,  General Support.
  • Maintenance and Repair-Facilities Mgmt.
  • Salary Competitiveness Component.
