Foundations

The Art Foundation program is the student's first experience in the Department of Art. Foundation courses serve as a prelude to the student's chosen discipline of study, providing a challenging and comprehensive initial experience for art majors.

Students explore the building-blocks of composition through the study of art principles and design (technical skills), explore the mechanics of seeing and invention (perceptual skills), and gaining a strong grasp of the vocabulary and methodology of visual thinking (conceptual skills).  All of these develop strong creative and critical thinking through hands-on studio lab environments where students foster an early sense of artistic community and are prepared for a richer, deeper learning experience within their chosen field of study.
