Michael was the assistant shop foreman and production potter for John Coiner, Inc. in Minneapolis, MN, from 1978 to 1982. This is also where he began his own studio and did contract throwing for area potters. Following, he moved to LeMars, Iowa to become a full-time studio potter, and in May 1990, he purchased acreage in the southeastern portion of South Dakota.
Currently, Michael is a full-time studio potter who sells his work at juried art shows, one-man shows, exhibitions, competitions, shops and galleries throughout the United States. He teaches workshops in raku, kiln building and woodfiring, as well as Ceramics at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion. His personal styles of pottery consist of stoneware, wood fire, salt and raku. Each has its own parameters and philosophy, which gives him new ideas and keeps his work fresh, enthusiasm high, and creativity in balance.
"The work I am most excited about is the next one." -Michael Hill
