The Stilwell Student Awards Exhibition is an annual exhibit in the Main Gallery that recognizes the talent and creative work from students in the USD Department of Art.
The exhibit is named for former Chair and Professor of Art, Wilber Stilwell, his wife Gladys Stilwell and the Stilwell family, who continue to provide support for the exhibition.
Wilber Moore Stilwell, educator and artist, was born in Covington, Indiana, on February 2, 1908. In the fall of 1941, Stilwell joined the Art faculty at the University of South Dakota as assistant professor and chair of the department. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1944 and served as department chair until 1967. After 31 years of service to USD, Stilwell retired in 1973. In 1974, he died unexpectedly at 66.
